Sometimes I Wonder About SANDWICHES*

Eating sandwiches is a more regular experience for me as of late. During this past year at school, I have had the pleasure of frequenting a fresh establishment nearly twice a week. It gets kind of old, but I really do like it a lot.
I really like sandwiches in general. And, there are a lot of places around here that really make some delicious types(case in point, Panera Bread Co. They make some good ones.)
I looked at the history of sandwiches and learned that it didn't just start with the Earl of Sandwich, John Montague. Who knows exactly where they started, but whoever thought of putting different items between slices of bread-like material, we salute you.

What are your favorites? What is the weirdest combination?
Might I offer some suggestions? A la my dad, the tricky "Pork and Bean Sandwich." Seriously. He was a sandwich scientist (not to be confused with artist, which would qualify him to work for Subway). He had these things down. He could make a sandwich out of anything.

This post could branch into different directions (like hot dogs, fast food sandwiches, the hamburger, etc). Say what you want. But let's give it up for the Sandwich.

*Post Script: I recognize that this may be a play off of a previous post, but I'm getting back in the game. Give a minute or two to loosen up.

Sandwiches are truly a great thing. They're a combination of so many great things all into one neat little package. Bread, vegetable, fat, meat, and dairy. Yumm-mm-y. When you get your "Fresh" sandwich twice a week, do you get the hot or cold? Did you ever go to Sensuous Sandwich in Orem?

Hey -- you're alive! How did your semester end up?

I prefer Peanut Butter and Honey sandwiches. (Mixed together before applied to the bread.) And good ol' tomato/mayo sandwiches. But I loved banana/mayo sandwiches and fried egg/ketchup sandwiches as a kid.

Sandwiches are glorious. My brother has a sandwich documentary that we saved on tivo and burned onto a dvd. He watches it all the time.

The best sandwiches are as follows:

- mayo, prime rib, and horseradish
- grilled peanut butter & jelly (peach)
- anything with fresh tomato
- anything with pepper jack cheese
- Potbelly's Sandwich Works. Yum.

ALSO, I love the thanksgiving sandwiches - the ones with turkey & cranberry - WOW! Although, let's be honest, there is no turkey sandwich to compare with the post-Thanksgiving white turkey meat with loads of mayo. Wow. Simple and satisfying. There's nothing like it.

Mikey's Back, Alright! (to the tune of that backstreet song)

In college I worked at Mama's Cafe, not sure if it's still in Provo but it was a little sandwich shop just off campus that had bands play at night. Very fun and free food for me. I couldn't go more than a few days without a bagel sandwich. And it was perfect having access to all the ingredients but making it myself so they were in the perfect proportions.

My co-worked used to tell me a guy just wants a girl who can make a good sandwich but so far this has not proven true.

I like turkey and swiss, PB&J, and that Thanksgiving sandwich. Oh and grilled cheese.

My stepfather used to eat PB & Mayo, so gross and he would always get globs of mayo in the PB jar, ewww!

I think mayo, in general, is pretty disgusting. If used, it should be applied as a very thin layer, just to make sure the sandwich isn't overly dry. Globs of it make me want to hurl.

I personally like to add chips to my sandwiches. Take a normal ham and cheese sandwich, add some doritos, and all of a sudden it's loaded with cheesy, salty goodness with a delightful crunch. If you haven't ever tried this, I'd highly recommend it.

My official summer 2001 lunch was a zemeln (Europe has the best bread!) slightly toasted, topped with tuna, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded carrots, salt and pepper. Totally delish.

Wow, folks. Some of these sound so delicious. It could be because I'm so close to eating time that I want to pack up camp and go home.

Step: I switch every now and then between the Club (with bacon), the Grilled Chicken Breast (with bacon), or the Chicken Bacon Ranch. Sometimes I'll treat myself to the Meatball sub. It's always a good thing. Sometimes I have them toasted, sometimes I don't. Depends on the day for me.

Rebecca: pretzel salt? on a sandwich? You must have picked that one up in Florida. The waffles are a good twist, though. Leggo my eggo--I'll keep the waffles, you get the pretzel salt.

RR: remember when brother chump and his wife slept on Jakes bed in the closet?

Lauren: thanks for noticing. I think that the mayo/banana sandwich sounds absolutely disgusting. But, the pbh was a staple growing up. My younger brother (now 24 and a week, happy birthday slim) still eats them just like that, too. When I was living with a family, they would make me fried egg-sandwiches with cheese. they were delicious. I miss them.

Karren: you present some good options. Condiments and components create combinations that come alive. I've had the first three, and totally agree. The pepper jack and Potbelly's I'll have to try out. Amen on thanksgiving.

Mr. P: your chicken salad sandwich sounds good enough to get everytime. Good choice.

Ansley: good ones. Your step dad should be sent to the gallows for getting mayo in the PB. That is just not ok.

Bethany: the zemeln with tuna might not be my favorite idea, but we could turn that into a chicken type thing and I'm sure it would be refreshing.

That's it. I'm going to eat.

Mikey, yes, I do remember and remember how what's his name (the Elder's quorum president, Josh?) freaked out and came upstairs to ask us who the girl was in Jake's bed?

Do you remember the time that we listened to House of Pain's Jump Around really loud with the speakers pointed at the floor and when Cindy came upstairs we pretended we were asleep?

Good times.

Good sandwich: pita bread, grilled onions and mushrooms, sliced avacodo, sliced tomato, sliced cucumber, salt, pepper, (vegan) cream cheese. Heavenly.

I think I'll be in D.C. in March.

No one has presented the Monte Cristo which I have recently perfected. This is how I make it:

Spread a healthy layer of home-made green tomatillo salsa on two slices of Texas toast. Layer slices of turkey, ham and pepper jack. Dip whole sandwich in egg and milk batter and fry it up in a pan like french toast. D-licious!

Otherwise I like me a eggplant parm sandwich from Snarf's.

Is it time for lunch yet?

bread in egg and milk batter with ham and cheese fried on pan.
Fried cheese, like my friend Shelly does them with lots and lots of butter. Never the same when I make them.
Tuna salat w/ capers, a classic.
Nice crusty bread with real butter and sliced boiled eggs are always my favorite though, just like my grandmother used to make me for school when I was little.

Once upon a time there was an entertaining blog writer (this was after blogs, but only slightly) named Mike. He wrote about delicious culinary concoctions and made all his readers hungry and happy. (This was after hunger.) One day Mike neglected his blog writing and all his faithful readers got really upset and started a mutiny. (This was after mutiny. Mutiny has been around longer than hunger.) When Mike caught wind of such mutiny he promptly responded with a tantalizing blog on mashed potatoes and gravy or ice cream (this was before good mashed potatoes because his blog inspired such wonderful creations that they just kept getting better.) And all his readers lived happily ever after. THE END

LOL @ post & comments.
Sandwiches are best when made by someone else.
My favorite odd sandwich is chocolate ice cream on white or sourdough bread. Yum, yum...
