Sometimes I Wonder about SLURPEES.

Recently we here in the metro area of our nation's capital celebrated the festival of the Cherry Blossom. People came from far and wide to clog the streets (even more than regular) to catch a view of the trees and their blossoms. I was told that it was the start of the tourist season. Great.

Having seen some fantastic views of the Jefferson Memorial amidst the blossoms, and after a little bit of thought (man...those really look like popcorn balls. What a nice surprise...it wasn't really so, but it seemed to me), it occurred that Spring time was around the corner. That means that Summertime is not too far away, too. Drums, please.

Summers mean all sorts of things to people. To me, I start thinking of all the delicious food and treats. Chief among them is my favorite: the Slurpee. I love them. I have become a connoisseur of sorts. I seek for the best Slurpee experience for everyone. I have been to many of the Seven-Eleven's around my house and have found some to be superior over others in their selection of slurpee flavors and in their keep up on the mix.

I started wondering where Slurpees got their start. I found my answers on www.slurpee.com. It is fantastic website that shares history, fun facts and even a few games on my favorite semi-frozen treat. I commend it to you as something worth reading up on.

So, I didn't have to wonder anymore about the Slurpee. I do, however, wonder about your take on it. How does it compare to the Slush-Puppy? The ICEE? The ever popular Shave Ice? How do you feel about mixing flavors? What is your favorite? I wonder. Do you have any special memories from your life where the beloved Slurpee was present? What about the "brain freeze?" Do you know/practice any technique in keeping from having that happen? Does anybody wonder why they happen? Please join with me as I wonder about the Slurpee.

For taking the chance on a risky business, to you, sev, I say Thank Heaven.

there are no 7 - 11s in Iceland, and slurpee machines few and far apart. I don´t think I´ve had a slurpee since I was in Canada last ín 1995. 11 years without a slurpee, what an awful thought. I like all flavors.

I'm also a big fan of slurpees...and I have so many stories associated with them.

1) When I was in high school, my little sis' and I went to the 7-11 on 5th and University for summertime-slurpee fun, and as we were driving back I was telling about some boy I had a crush on, clearly not paying attention to the road...when we got to the light by zion's bank, all the other cars stopped, except me. Well, I guess I technically stopped when my car slammed in to the one in front of me... Bad news. I was also driving my Dad's new car. Ouch.

2) One of the best ways to enjoy a slurpee is while sitting in a hot tub. My last year in Provo, my roommies and I would have our own FHE every Monday night (who needs a group?) which consisted of a Slurpee run and crashing the University Villa hot tub. It was the perfect time to go because everyone else was at FHE and we had the place all to ourselves.

3) The 7-11 on 5th and University in Provo was probably the most frequently visited one in Provo. Consequently there were usually several choices not yet icy, and they didn't have the best flavors. There is a secret 7-11 that we called "Ghetto 7-11" just west of University by the hospital. They always had a better selection of flavors that were always icy.

My personal favorite flavor combo is peach (you hardly ever find it, but it is by far the most delicious flavor of slurpee ever invented) with pina colada. Divine!!

oh slurpee... how i love thee. as for those imposters you mentioned, the ICE-EE, the slush puppy, the snow cones and shaved ices.... they just don't cut it. my love for the slurpee grew at a young age under the arizona heat... those and swimming pools will pretty much our only respite.

in high school i entered a "brain freeze" contets at 7-11... your tongue had to be the craziest color because of a slurpee. i won a brain-freeze shirt and wore it proudly.

sophomore year of college an underground group of us would wait until midnight on sundays... walk to the 7-11, get slurpees and snacks and go back to watch south park.

so yes, i love the slurpee.

dagga, do you have snowcones?

because, i have to tell you. i think the snowcone can kick the slurpee's ass.

it was many a year before i realized this, and yes, part of it was being in quitman, arkansas for six months where there wasn't even a grocery proper, let alone a 7-11.

enter the snowcone. now, i'd heard of their virtues from the pop/punk band sicko, but until i had one myself.

i think that the snowcone lasts longer without the weird slush thing at the bottom of a slurpee that is both flavorless and chunky. plus, more flavor options.

however, i salute mikey for wondering about them.

p.s. tales from the birdbath (ean sicko's current band) has the best song about snowcone's ever.

you can find an mp3 acoustic version at neatshows.com under the mp3 part.

Slurpees are a wonderful treat. Although, in the south I remember them having the MOST INCREDIBLE "shaved ice" stands. They put actual cream on them, have 50 different flavors, and have the most delicious syrups. I'd have to say they take the cake and they were ALL over Mississippi and Louisiana.

Ummm, they were incredible and honestly put slurpees to shame.

I hear your argument about the shaved ice. But for me, that was just a weird treat. I liked it, but I liked it like I liked getting socks for Christmas.
Nah...I kid. The Shave Ice is a very good stand in for the Slurpee.
I salute that.
But, AB, I would NEVER say that they put slurpees to shame. Nobody puts Slurpee in the corner.

Mike, I am glad to see you back wondering about things again.

I have a really great memory associated with a seven-eleven and a slurpee. My rebelious cousin Emily had come to my house for a week long visit during the summer when I was 13. She convinced me that my father was tyranical and that I needed to do something about it. So we rode our bikes to the nearest 7-11. I had always been taught that consuming caffinated beverages was akin to murder in seriousness so I thought that would be a good way to get back at the man without actually hurting anyone.

So I bought a MEGA sized mountain dew slurpee with my 85 cents and pre-teen bravado. Once we got outside I was too nervous about getting caught that I couldn't even take a sip. I was such a weiner.

I will have to agree with adopted bluth on this one. There is a little joint called Pace’s Dairy Anne and they have the most amazing treat called “The Rainbow.” It is basically a heavier slurpee with a shot of soft serve in the middle. Yum YUM!! There are also snow cone shacks all over Hawaii that start their snow cone with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, cover that in ice, and then top it off with a generous amount of syrup. Cherry all the way! I agree that slurpees are good, but if they would add a bit of soft serve, they would be better.

Side note: Pace’s popsicles are almost as good as “The Rainbow!”

What a great thing to wonder about.

I love Slurpees. I grew up about 2 blocks away from a 7-11.

And then as a freshman in college, before Preference, we did a progressive dinner which included a stop to get Blue Raspberry slurpees (which required calling around to find one with that flavor).

As a junior, I lived about 2 blocks away from the 7-11 at 5th and University. Everytime I wanted a slurpee, I had to walk past the house of a boy I liked and that's how we started dating. A relationship based on mutual love of slurpees, can you believe it didn't work out?

I like mixing flavors so I wish they would have more of the basic flavors, peach, cherry, pina colada, strawberry... Like the Fresh Prince says "If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it."

As a child, I would sometimes receive an ICEE after visiting the local K Mart. While working during the summer in Provo, my coworkers and I would take breaks together and hit up the Sev on State. Oh, the sugary goodness of the ICEE and Slurpee.
I do, however, have to get a major shout out to Matsumotos in Haliewa, Hawaii. Have you ever had a snow cone with ice cream in the bottom? Pure heaven in a paper cone.
There was once a time in my life not too long ago that I abstained from such things as slurpees, ICEEs, and ice-cream filled snow cones. Not for any medical reason; just as a personal goal, and the ONLY exception I ever made was one night...while on a date...

that's right...

I had a slurpee.

If only I knew where there was a 7-11 here in San Francisco.

Step: here's a plan. Go to maps.google.com. Type in Seven Eleven San Francisco. You will find over 1,000 listings, but not all of them are the actual Sev. Good luck. There is probably one close to your house that you just don't know about yet. Good Luck.

Ansley: thanks for incorporating the video into your comment. That made my day. I have listened to that thing probably 20 times in the past few days.

I have heard about the Matsumotos. I understand that it's good.

Has anyone actually looked at the history of the Slurpee or it's Fun Facts page on the website? C'mon people. It's fantastic.

you guys are all silly.
while i find that slurpees are nice... i don't forsee myself buying one ever again. if its hot out and i'm thirsty, i'll take a gatorade.

if i want a delicious indulgence, the blizzard is good for a laugh.

you kids, bunch of rascals

If it's hot out and I'm thirsty, I'd probably get a peach-flavored propel. That stuff is the nectar of the gods. It kind of makes me mad that the people at costco won't sell peach in the big crates...'cause I'd buy it.

But, Mr. Pulsipher, Slurpees aren't just about thirst quenching. It's an experience in happy summer fun...or creating happy summer fun in the middle of the winter. Slurpees transcend thirst...

hmm, i've never been hot to trot for the slurpee. when i did buy them, i could only ever buy a small one. imagine my great disdain when i got a slurpee on a hot day in utah only to discover that it was absolutely nothing like a canadian slurpee. the consistency was all wrong. it was fluffy instead of icy. yuckee. since then, i just don't bother. i've become such a huge fan of water that it is what i usually crave.

if i were to drink another slurpee, it would have to be back home (sorry, i am just used to that consistency), no mixing whatsoever, and likely coke.

tiffany, in canada mountain dew didn't have caffeine in it for the longest time. only recently did they start adding it.

dagga, popsickles also rule. my mom used to make them from apple, grape or orange juice, which is also very good.

aisy, canadian slurpees do rule over usa ones. one time i was working in the yukon and was going back to the states and needed to get rid of canadian cash and we loaded up on canadian slurpees and candy bars, about $25 worth. that was fun.

mikey, i'm ready for some more wondering...ready, steady, go!

froncemike!!

Once during homecoming in high school we had a slurpee brain freeze contest between grades, where each grade picked two "Master Slurpee Drinkers" (one male, one female) and raced to see which grade could down it the fastest. I think quite a few MSDs passed out.

My best childhood memories, though, were associated with my friend
Snoopy
. Can you believe the travesty that it is out of stock on Amazon???

In Arizona, although we had 7-11, I didn't know about the slurpee, cause we always went to Circle K. Sad for me, I clearly had a deprived childhood.

However, I really like orange cremesicles and rootbeer float popsicles. A clear shout out to all things icey with ice-cream in the middle - never a bad idea!

Speaking of popsicles...DH, you'll appreciate this...one summer Davey J's younger siblings (all three of them) laid seige on my house to steal our store of otter pops. Naturally, I was adamant that they get NOTHING - but my sister Laura (traitor) let them in through the living room window. I didn't send Timmy a wedding gift - I figure he still has my otter pops.

Nothing makes me more upset than if I got to 7-11 and they don't have cherry. Cherry is the reason slurpee exists. Cherry is the king of all flavors. I wrote a letter to 7-11 once because they didn't have Cherry in my closest store for over a month. Nothing happened.

Seriously, are you ever going to post again?
