Sometimes I Wonder About Quesadillas.

Due to a recent phenomenon, the quesadilla has taken a HUGE step forward--from obscurity into light. What once was a side item at that took a back seat to the fajita or burrito*, has now been launched into stardom. Kids are asking for them. People are ordering them. It's the newest link in the recent chain of latin craze.

A trip down memory lane
I enjoyed the occaisional cheesey-tortilla when I was a kid, but much preferred the nachos to the tortilla. I think it was just my young affinity for fried foods that made the chips so appealing. But, as I entered college--yes, college--I was introduced to a cheap snack. And, since my funds were a bit sparse, I relished in this dish. (although relish was used in that last sentence, no relish was used in the making of this blog, nor any quesadilla by yours truly.)

I was straight up PO-O-O-O-OR when I started school. Cheese was expensive, but tortillas were not. And, it provided a nice change of taste from my staple, the local gem. Since then, I have scarffed down quesadillas like mad. I'm a plain kinda kid. Cheese and tortilla is good enough for me. Others get really serious and add all sorts of flavors and concoctions.

Tell me: have YOU ever wondered about the quesadilla? Again, simple, but sublime. What do you like on them? Who makes the best? Is there such thing as a healthy one?

This post is dedicated to the homies from Crestwood. You know who you is.

i am pretty much a cheese only quesadilla eater. but when i do make them for myself, i have an apple or grapes on the side. take several bites of the cheesy goodness, swallow, chase it with the fruit. it's good...

i don't ever order them out. it's my simple meal when i'm lazy at home.

Nice job on all the links. My favorites? Stardom, of, and craze. Nice.

I don't eat quesadillas a lot, but when I have them, I wonder why I don't eat them more often.

I like a little meat in my quesadilla. It's hard for me to just eat cheese. I'm not a huge cheese-by-itself kind of fan.

I might get beaten up for this, but actually, I like Taco Bell's quesadillas. I like the spicy cheesy sauce, and I usually don't like spicy foods . . .

aisy, you are so right about chasing the cheese with fruit. it is the most important bit.

mikey, thanks for the shout out. do you remember bisquits and grazy?

actually, i'm trying to eat as much cheese as possible this month so when i stop eating it next month i'll be kind of sick of it. the thing is to get sick of cheese you have to eat a lot.

something tells me you aren't from the grand canyon state... land of tumble weed, sagaro cacti, a big canyon, copper mines and quesadillas.... we subsisted on them. we at them at least twice a week growing up... but they were cheese crisps. everytime we went to a mexican restaurant we got them. i lived on them in college. i may just be a minimalist... but i still prefer just the tortillas and cheese. if i wanted a manwich tortilla i'd get a burrito!

That picture at the top of your post is making my mouth water. For me, the quesadilla is like a blank canvass on top of which you add delicious sauces. Well, does guacamole count as a sauce? I like to mash up avacados and add some salt and salsa, then it doesn't even matter if your cheese is moldy--you'll have a delicious quesadilla experience.

I also like to keep my quesadillas simple. Because, when dealing with cheesy-tortillas, you certainly don't want to go overboard

Oh, quesadillas. How much do I love thee. I remember coming home from high school and nuking a fatty plain cheese quesadilla everyday and as I sat down to enjoy it I would flip the TV to TBS for a nice 1 hour block of Saved By the Bell.

The best quesadillas in the world are from Rio Grande in Farifax Corner:

But I still think that Taco Bell's chicken ones are wonderful. Ummm with that tasty jack sauce.

I do love the cheese quesadilla but also love it when I remember I have a little leftover grilled chicken in the fridge to throw on it.

Aisy - I have never tried the fruit chaser but I do like to put a little Safeway peach pineapple salsa on the quesadilla, probably the same end result, and it's so yummy!

Mike, I love that all that you have wondered about is food. I am serious, I love it.

Quesadillas are so good. I admit that I do not have high brow tastes, for my favorite quesadilla is the Spicey Jack quesadilla from Del Taco. It has been over 3 years since I last had one of those beauties.

Aisy - good call on the addition of fruit. I had never thought to do that before.

By the way mike, I was looking at cooking light magazine the other day and they had a recipie for quesadillas, so aparently there is such thing as a healthy quesadilla. I will let know all know if it is any good.

My after-school snack today was a quesadilla and some grapes. Delicious. Thank you all for the inspiration.

Quesadillas are a fairly new experience for me, I love them with chicken and red peppers and of course guacamole. Guacamole rules, I always order extra.

These responses are fantastic. I love the idea of the fruit. My dear grandmother used to have apples and cheese as a treat and I thought it was gross until I was 11. Then I tried it. It was great. Makes total sense to me to have the fruit and cheese combo.

Some people like the Taco Bell quesadillas. That's fine. I can eat those. Del Taco (thanks for the reminder Tiff) is my favorite. Del Taco is probably my favorite "mexican" place to eat.

The idea of a healthy quesadilla sounds fantastic, not that I'm all that concerned. I love that magazine, by the way. And Real Simple. Call me crazy.

Guacamole=yum.

Dagga--glad that you have recently been indoctrinated with the south-of-our-border delight.

Any more ideas of what might be a delicious combo?

i love it.

i've found a vegetable chimichanga in town that might beat out any quesadilla.

however, i think if we just put the veggies (spinach, corn, carrots, brocoli, etc.) in the quesadilla it just might work.

i think now is the time to address the fact that taco bell has used the quesadilla to propitiate its horrendous ad campaign.

the whole "good to go" thing is painfully unfunny.

I made the comment to Mr. Pulsipher earlier today about my blogging exploits (or current lack thereof.) I have been in the grips of finals and procrastination, which does not make for my mind to wonder about much except: WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE OVER?!
Next week is the answer. It will be over next week.

Word travels fast ... especially when you live in the same household of AK.

I love Quesadillas!!! If preferring mozzarella is heresy; I am a heretic.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Quesadillas, taquitos, homeade salsa ... comemos!
